Rector's ramblings - MARCH 2004
We are at the mid-point of Lent drawing nearer each day to the great celebration of Easter, the principle feast of the Christian Year.
Our Pizza and Variety Show this year provided another wonderful evening of fun, fellowship and really great entertainment. I am so grateful to everyone who worked to make the evening a success especially Carolyn Hatch who organized the acts each year and introduces them along with Vernon Hinkle who also provides pleasantries between acts as well as substituting for those who don’t show up. They are a great team. I am always amazed at the talent of all ages we have in the parish. We have video tapes of the program available for circulation. It was another wonderful Bethesda family night.
It’s never too late to begin Lenten disciplines. Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday on April 4th presents opportunities for special devotion each day. There are daily 12:10 pm celebrations of Holy Eucharist through Wednesday. That evening at 7 pm the Stations of the Cross are marked with a procession and prayers. The Maundy Thursday evening service at 7 pm on April 8th is one of the most spiritually compelling celebrations of the church year. A watch is kept with the Blessed Sacrament through the night at the Altar of Repose until the Liturgy of Good Friday begins the next day at Noon.
I am delighted to welcome The Rt. Rev’d David S. Ball, Retired Bishop of Albany, as our preacher for the Hours of the Cross from 1:15 to 3pm Good Friday. He is a long time friend of Bethesda, as a former Assistant here in the early years of his ministry. He is currently assisting at our Cathedral in Albany where he was the Dean before becoming our Bishop.
Please be serious about planning ahead and being present for these celebrations of our Salvation. I pray you are having a blessed Lent and rejoicing in the path that leads to Resurrection Joy.
