Advent begins the Christian year and also one of the busiest times of the year for us all. I thought I might share with you again this year some thoughts on advent from a few years ago. Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas, but most of us need a season to prepare for that season. My thoughts at this time of year on these things are that we should be making the most of our preparations and celebrations. As we purchase gifts for someone, we should enjoy thinking of them, reviewing the special moments we have had with them and simply holding them near to us as we wrap and prepare to give something of ourselves to them again this year. It truly is the “thought” that counts especially if our thoughts and prayers have already been dwelling with those we are gifting and greeting at Christmas. The many social gatherings can be viewed the same way if we carry with us a sense of value for each person we meet however briefly. If we think and speak as if our Lord were present (because He really is) almost any gathering can be a delight to us and to Him. You might also want to return to a special time in your childhood and re-live it as you prepare for Christmas as an adult. If you have children, they might be very interested in some of your childhood stories. Some prepare for Christmas as if in Lent with some added disciplines, Bible reading, family prayers at mealtime and even creating some quiet time by silencing the radio or tv at times they are normally on. Most of all, if you have much, remember those who have little; if you are busy, remember those who are not; if you are joyful, remember those in sorrow and in so doing all will be enriched by the love of this Jesus who came for the love of us all. Blessed Advent, Thomas T. Parke |
