The Treble Choir

Farrell Goehring, Organist/Treble Choirmaster
The Treble Choir is one of the two ensembles that comprise the Daniel Jones Griffith Memorial Choir at Bethesda Episcopal Church. As such, it joins the Schola Cantorum in offering anthems and service music at the parish's 10 a.m. Choral Eucharist each Sunday from approximately September to Christmas and from mid-January through early June, excluding school holidays. When in season the Treble Choir rehearses each Wednesday afternoon from four-thirty to five-thirty in the Parish House choir-room. On Sunday morning Trebles arrive at the choir-vestry in the church undercroft at nine-o'clock to vest, collect hymnal and music folders (should these not have been taken home after Wednesday's rehearsal), and pick up a service leaflet. Having done so, they join the schola for a rehearsal in the choirstalls upstairs. Occasionally a brief Sunday, twelve-noon rehearsal may be called.

The curriculum of the Treble Choir follows the Choristers Training Scheme of England's Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) with which the Bethesda Choir has been affiliated since 1976. Young persons usually begin the curriculum upon reaching the second grade in school, and are eligible for admission to the Treble Choir providing they are secure in reading ability and agree to be in regular attendance. Guided by the Choirmaster, the Trebles measure their accomplishments by a series of examinations outlined in the RSCM Level Booklet, with each chorister undertaking them at her/his own pace and receiving official recognition after successful completion. In addition to musical skills and knowledge, the RSCM Training Scheme nurtures understanding and appreciation of the faith and worship of the Christian Church.
